What do I do if my dentist won't see me on emergency and I am having wisdom teeth problems?

I posted a question a couple hours ago about my 4 impacted wisdom teeth I got taken out, the dry socket I developed which the dentist did nothing about, and how there was a decently sized shard of tooth still in one of the extraction sites which I removed myself last night with alot of effort and bleeding. I left a message for the dentist on call (the place I got the procedure done was not my regular dentist or anything) and when they called back they said that they wouldn't see me and now I don't know what to do because everything I've read and all the answers I have received have told me that I need to see someone immediately and that it would be well considered an emergency, but the pain isn't serious enough for me to think I would have to go to the ER. What do I do now? I can't see my regular dentist today because it's Sunday and there is no one on call but I can see him tomorrow but I'm also leaving for vacation at 9 am and I am very stressed.

First of all I work in a dental office and they HAVE TO have someone on call on Sunday- it's illegal not to. They may not want to see you b/c they did not do the surgery. Call the office who did the surgery-they have to see you. It is normal for boney pieces to work there way out after the surgery-LEAVE THEM ALONE!! They will come out on there own don't pull them out. Second of all if you have a dry socket they will pack it with medicine and it will be instant relief. If noone will help you out where you have gone it is time to find a new dentist. Call the oral surgeon--or go to the hospital they have dentists ( usually residents) on staff and they can help you. Leave your own mouth alone. Take 3 advil every 6 hours if you are in pain. It depends on the state!!! Where I live a DMD can not refuse tmt on a pt. This is for the know it all who wrote after me.
Reply:If you don't think you can wait, look up an ER dentist in the phone book and do a walk in appointment. Also, in my area, the state hospital is equipped to do dental emergencies as well.





I would say if you pulled a piece of tooth out yourself, that IS an emergency.
Reply:yup, just walk in onto an er. they will treat you anyway whether for you, it is a real emergency or not. and go look for another dentist. preferably, one who really cares for their patients.
Reply:Call the oral surgeon's office that did your extraction. They should have a number to call in an emergency. If that doesn't work, go to your local urgent care center. Some are attached to a tradition ER in a hospital, some are stand-alone. But they'll be able to help you out without keeping you there for hours on end. You also may want to look into alternate choices for when to leave for vacation. How much fun will you really have if you're in that much pain anyway?
Reply:go to an er immediately because you dont want toget on vacation and get caugt out three though the pain is not strong now anything will trigger a attack and you will go crazy better safe than sorry at least the er will prevent you from waking up or having a drink ont the plane and it triggers your tooth

Reply:GO TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM! You should have NEVER attempted to remove the shard of tooth. That was beyond STUPID and you very likely will wind up with an infection as a result. Dry socket can be caused by smoking, sucking on a straw, or spitting can also cause it. So can bacteria - which probably came from you sticking your hands in your mouth, digging at the extraction like an idiot. Dry socket is VERY common and is not life threating. Its also not uncommon for small portions of the root to remain after an extraction. Unlike a medical doctor, a dentist can turn you away for treatment. Because if any matter is life threating - they would have to send you to an ER anyway. So, stop stressing out and head for a hospital. Socket irrigation and some topical anti-inflammatory drugs can treat dry socket - you can get them from an emergency room. No dentist is going to see you today and they aren't obligated to anyway. The person before me stated it was illegal for a dentist to not have someone on call - thats not correct. They can simply state on the recording that if you are having a dental emergency to head to your nearest emergency room. You'll have instant relief once you get treatment. AND KEEP YOUR HANDS OUT OF YOUR MOUTH!
