Teeth problems?

my cat is 15 years old and i just noticed her eye teeth are crooked and one is about to fall out.the vet is on vacation until jan,18.what can i do for her.she will not eat hard food anymore but she will eat soft foods and baby food, and she has lost about 3 pounds, but seems to be content, but does not eat as much as she use to.

Teeth problems?
Kitty has advanced gingevitis and probably needs a number of teeth extracted. She may be in great pain from toothaches!

Hard food isn't good for her anyway, but the fact that she won't eat it shows that her mouth hurts. Keep feeding her canned food and baby food for now. It's important that she keep her tummy full or she risks hepatic lipidosis, a fatal liver condition.

When you buy baby food read the labels and be sure to get flavors with NO Onions!! Most baby foods have onions, and onions cause anemia in cats. That's the last thing you need in a cat that isn't eating enough!

Because of the possibility severe of toothache pain I'd suggest getting her to another vet asap rather than waiting for her regular doctor to return from vacation.

If you're wondering about why I said hard food isn't good for her, this is where you can find out: http://www.catinfo.org
Reply:Feed the cat soft food until you can get it to the vet for a dental
Reply:With out seeing the vet there isn't anything you can do about the vet. I would recommend seeing somebody else until your vet gets back.

Continue to feed wet food, since your cat is having teeth trouble, get some chicken necks or chicken winglets and have them ground bone and all and feed your kitty the ground food. The bone ground into the meat will help provide your cat with more calcium.

Or even better you can go to:

They carry a line of already ground all natural, organic meats, with veggies and fruits ect... All you have to do is buy it, freeze it and cut it as you need it.

But i would make sure you see somebody now who will determine if the cat has stopped eating because of the teeth or if it is something much more serious. Which is very possible because of the age of your cat. At least get that first opinion until your vet gets back.
Reply:your cat isn't exactly young so i can understand why she doesn't eat hard food,I'd definitely feed it soft food because the hard food will more then likely be hurting it's teeth as well, remember your cat is quite old in terms of age
Reply:fortunately the bad teeth is not immediately life threatening... but it could be in the long run. The loose and crooked teeth will have to be extracted and as soon as possible becuase these cause great pain and discomfort to your cat. Keep feeding her soft foods only and take her to the vet to have the teeth taken cared off as soon as you can.

My cat also had mouth issues and had to have 4 extractions last summer. Periodontal gum disease due to plaque and tartar build-up. He is a much happier cat now.

Oh yes... since your cat is 15, don't forget to ask the vet to take a blood test before surgery (they will have to administer anesthesia when they have to work on cats' teeth). Just to check how her organs are functioning and whether she can undergo anesthesia. A good vet will put her on a drip during the surgery to support her kidneys. Don't forget to ask about that.

Good luck!
Reply:Do not wait until your vet is back from vacation take her to another vet, if she is not eating the hard food and she is loosing weight this is not a good sign!!!!
Reply:I think that another 18 days is too long to wait to have the teeth taken care of. If there is infection there it could spread throughout her body. With an older cat it could have a very dire effect on her kidneys.

If it were me I would get her in tomorrow and definitely have the teeth taken care of this week.

The teeth are painful for her too so she needs relief from that as soon as possible.
Reply:give her soft food and ask a vet about it!
Reply:This can be a bad situation. She can get very sick or maybe she already is sick from bad teeth. I would desparately try to find another vet quickly. Did your vet leave any referral numbers?
