Anyone had teeth problems during or after a pregnancy?

I was just curios if anyone has had any teeth complications from being pregnant? either during or after the pregnancy?

I'm 28 weeks pregnant (with no teeth problems, thank God!)

but I've heard that if the baby isn't getting something they need .. its comes directly from you (like taking calcium from your teeth).

Ever since I became pregnant I've been taking pre-natals and calcium supplements (and I eat a lot of TUMS) .. and haven't had any teeth problems yet .. does that mean it should continue to go smoothly? or does pregnancy automatically cause teeth problems?

thanks! :)

Anyone had teeth problems during or after a pregnancy?
t is common to have dental problems associated with pregnancy. Pregnancy gingivitis is probably most common. With this condition, the gums are usually red and swollen. They can also bleed easily and become very sore or sensitive.

This increased gingival inflammation is usually first seen around the second month of pregnancy and reaches its maximum around the eighth month of pregnancy, due to an increased level of circulating progesterone and estrogen. The usual decrease in inflammation in the ninth month follows a decrease in the level of these hormones.

Studies have also shown that there is an alteration in the bacterial levels surrounding the gum tissue, and that the immune system responds differently to plaque during pregnancy.

The best way to avoid or alleviate the gingival problems associated with pregnancy is to practice excellent oral hygiene:

* Brush at least two times a day.

* Carefully floss at least once a day.

* Rinse with mouthwash or warm salt water, but be careful not swallow it. The warm salt water can help to soothe the inflamed tissues.

* Schedule regular dental visits and periodic professional teeth cleanings.

It is possible that calculus or tartar below the gumline may be present, which will constantly irritate the gums, creating more inflammation. Some scaling and root planing may be necessary, although it is advisable stick with routine teeth cleaning during the first trimester. If any scaling and root planing is needed, it should be wait until the second trimester.
Reply:Glad I could help, just keep on doing that it will get better... I have the problem of bleeding gums....

31 weeks pregnant with first. Report It

Reply:My dentist told me that it isn't so much the pregnancy as it is the vomiting due to pregnancy. I have been pregnant 4 times now (currently still pregnant with #4) and don't have teeth problems. You should be fine.
Reply:in some people it can cause problems but not in all cases if the baby is getting what it needs then you should not have anything to worry about!
Reply:My gums used to bleed when I brushed my teeth sometimes, but it was nothing to worry about just as you say, baby taking extra calcium from me. If you've had no problems so far, chances are you wont get any, ever pregnancy is different. Being prenant doesn't 'automatically' cause any problems - apart from getting bigger!
Reply:YES! My gums bled my entire 2 pregnancies, and now i get tooth aches all the time, from not taking in enough calcium when i was preggo, so go nutz on it and take your pre-natal vitamins!
Reply:Teeth problems aren't a sign that something is wrong or not wrong. I had drank alot of milk and calcium products but I still had problems with my teeth. Seems the girls I had took all my calcium and left none for ME!!!! Just keep up with what you are doing and don't worry. Enjoy your pregnancy its the most precious time of your life other than the time of giving birth and looking at what the two of you have brought into this world. Good Luck!!!!!!
Reply:I had 2 kids and have had no dental problems at all, but my sister got a lot of cavities after having her son, and was told it was from pregnancy. My mom's dentist just told her that you have good teeth or you dont, just keep doing what you are and make sure you get your regular check ups during and after and they should catch anything before it is a problem.
Reply:I took my prenatal vitamins with all 3 of my kids.

My teeth were pretty good before kids. They are AWFUL now!!! I'm maintaining them and getting them fixed, but I've had more cavities, etc after kids then ever before.

And yes - I do brush and floss every day. The kids did just strip my teeth of calcium!! It sucks!

I also didn't drink a whole lot of milk either when I was pregnant.... who knows.
Reply:You can have any problem when pregnant. It affects your whole body, but doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong. I took prenatals, and was addicted to milk, and my teeth bleed when I brushed them. But then again, they hurt when I had sinus problems, too.

Be careful about taking too much calcium. The prenatal and ONE supplement is plenty.
