Just had my wisdom teeth removed and I'm having problems...?

I just had 4 wisdom teeth removed and now everytime I open my jaw I hear a popping or cracking sound in my right ear. Is this a normal sideeffect? Will it go away? If anyone has had some experience with this I would appreciate your help. Thanks

Yes. It's probably temporary. You've developed something called trismus in one of the muscle that support the TMJ joint. The Temporal Mandibular Joint is very complex with I think 4-6 muscles that stabalize the little cartilage over the bone. After Extraction or oral surgury often a muscle can get thrown out of wack. Lots of reasons; over stretched, the injection in the muscle, and more. Anyway the point is it will heal. Don't play with it you can make it worse or damage the cartilage if you keep moving it while the muscles are in spasm

Here's what to do

1. Let your dentist know the situation

2. Hot and cold compresses

3. Re-evaluate in a week or so

4. Let your dentist know

Use hot and cold alternating compresses. I can't stress enough how important it is you not play with it, test it out if you will. Give it a week or so. Keep your Dentist/oral surgeon in the loop.

If you develope a fever or loose even more mobility Call the dentist immediately.
Reply:you might want to call the people who did the surgery i know i didnt have that problem when i had mine taken out

feel better!!!!!!!!!!!
Reply:I would call your oral surgeon to let him/her know the problems you are having. However, this is most likely something that will go away in a few weeks. Many third molars take a great deal of effort to extract...leading to minor trauma to the TMJ....the problem you are having will most likely heal up and go away.
Reply:I had that same sensation after having one taken out. I'm inclined to say that it will pass afer a few days/ weeks, but definitiely give the oral surgeon a call just in case. The popping sound only lasted a couple of weeks with me and was not painful.
Reply:I am going to dental school and we just talked about the poipping sopunds,it is normal, your jaw is popping back in place from the pulling and tugging. If the popping becomes painful and lasts longer than a few days(4-5)then call your dentist.
