Breath depends on the condition of the gums, not the teeth. Make sure that he flosses daily, and uses a sulcus toothbrush (at a 45 degree angle) to clean the gumline. Have him eat more fruits and vegetables to keep his mouth moist, and avoid alcohol which dries the mouth.
Reply:make sure that he is brushing the back of his toung because over 80% of bad breath comes from there.
Reply:Does he smoke or eat a lot of nasty food? Are his gums OK? His teeth could look OK, but if he doesn't floss well, there could be issues there. Advise him to brush his tongue, too - that gets rid of that whitish film and can only enhance his breath.

Barring all that, I'd have him visit his doctor to see if there's anything wrong - but if it's a breath issue, his dentist should be able to suggest something. Ask your own dentist about this, but don't mention names, of course - doctor/patient privilege is one thing, but dentists are still human and might remember names.
Reply:He could have the gum disease called gingivitis. Have him go to his dentist and he will advise him on it.
Reply:how long has this been going on? when is it the worst? what makes it worse? what makes it better? Be armed with these answers and see a doctor.
Reply:Speaking from experience, my husband had terrible breath and when he found out that there were no dental issues we pursued it farther. His internist did some diagnostic tests and low and behold the culprit was a positive PSA. He had prostate cancer. There are usually no obvious symptoms so he was unaware. Once he had the surgery his breath was normal again. I hope this is not the case for your boyfriend. Best wishes to you both! (Don't forget to rule out Diabetes or stomach ulcers) :%26gt;)
Reply:You should maybe encourage water also. Some people have halitosis which is cronic bad breath.
Reply:yeah it sounds like he has halitosis and that can be caused by intestinal disturbances as well as poor oral hygiene, and diseases of the mouth, throat, nose or lungs.

You should talk to him about it, maybe together you can find a solution to the problem. If its a medical problem it isn't something he should take personally.
Reply:he could need to brush better, have gingivitis and so forth, but could he be diabetic, some times when diabetics have high ketone levels in their body their breath gets horrible.
