I'm 4 month pregnant now. now i have wisdom tooth problems.what home treatment i can take?

im a highrisk patient. because of the previous pregnancy problems like pre-eclampcia,2 misscarriages.... now i have swelling and bit pain in my wisdom tooth area. i went to the dentist. he sent me to the radiologist to take x-ray. but the radiologist told the dentist its not safe doing x-ray at this early stage of pregnancy. but the dentist didnot care about my baby. still they ask to do x-ray. he also said until that he cant tell anything. but he ask me to take panadol to releif the pain. he didnt give any medicines.bcoz it can affect the fetus. so...im still in bit pain and swelling...im not ready to do any operation before my delivery.my due is 1/12/2007. this baby is important to us after i had so many problems. so until what home treatment i need to do to reduce the swelling and irritation?? please give me your opinion......

Wow. Number 1 - get a new dentist. he souds terrible and very unthoughful.

I would make a new appt with a new dentist ASAP. If you explain your situation, a good dentist will squeeze you in right away.

Take Tylenol until then if you are in extreme pain (unless your doctor has already told you there is some issue with that). When I was pregnant, I was told AND everything I have read indicates acetominophen is safe for you and the baby while pregnant.

Good luck.
Reply:I would NEVER attempt to tell you what to do in your case as I am not a Dr. and can understand all your worries. My suggestion however would be to try and find another Dentist. I have wisdom teeth removed while pregnant with my son 14 years ago and all though a little painful for a day or two it was worth it to get rid of the pain I was having.

My Dentist at the time didn't do an x-ray and was very careful to keep me comfortable and answer any and all questions.
Reply:go to a different dentist and have them look at it, i had an x-ray done at 4 moth pregnant , i just made sure they put 2 x-ray vest over me. I also had a cavity which they filled for me. my friend went in to have her wisdom teeth pulled at 5months pregnant, but due to the fact the tooth would not come out no matter how much they tried to pull it out, she has to come back after the baby is born to be put under !!. having a tooth that is infected,(swelling, bleeding) can cause problems for your pregnancy, due to the fact tooth infection can spread. If they can`t pull the tooth out, get some antibiotics to at least make sure it does not get infected!!

mother of 3 and 31 weeks prego
Reply:if you have so many problems... and you say "a bit of pain". Then sorry to tell you this but my guess is that all the doctors are going to tell you to wait until after the birth to have the tooth fixed. It's cut and dry to me.

treatment... very old fashioned. pultice? Look up what goes into one and you might be able to help others in future with similar problems.
Reply:Well firstly there is ZERO risk to getting your head x-rayed during pregnancy. Your baby will be shielded and the x-rays pointed at an entirely different area of your body.

Secondly there is a risk to not having this treated, if the infection moves to your bloodstream it can cause preterm birth.

You can use clove essential oil diluted in cooking oil topically to relieve the pain (dilute it until it doesn't sting when applied to the inside of your cheek). This is what is in most OTC temporary fillings.

BUT you must deal with this if there is an infection, and before they can deal with it they need the xray to know how far the infection has spread. You could try a course of antibiotics without the xray and see if that does seem to make it clear up, but it won't work if there is an absess. I guess you could also talk to a second dentist and see if there is a way of assessing the tooth with ultrasound. But dental infections put you at a higher risk of preterm labour which is much, much more dangerous than anything that would be used to treat the problem.
Reply:First, go find a real dentist, not this quack you described. Even if he did accidently directly x-ray the baby unless you were unconsious and layed there with xray machine on max for more than 5 minutes with no sheilding the baby will be fine. It's an xray picture, directed at your face with your belly sheilded. Dumb doctor.

2. Oragel (check with your doctor first though). It will numb the pain, just be careful not to swallow too much of it.

3. Crushed cloves packed around your tooth or soak the crushed cloves in pure olive oil (if you have it, veg oil works but really tastes bad) overnight and then dip some gauze in and pack that around your tooth. It helps to take down the swelling and if it is absessing it might bring the poison out to where the doctor can easily lance it for you.

4. Ice - either applied to your cheek area if that is sore or swollen or suck on it, keeping it over the bad tooth.

5. Stay away from salty foods, foods with small seeds, spicey stuff, anything that might irritate it even more.

6. Make sure you get a different dentist (I know I said that already but he should now that the stress of a sore tooth outweighs any risks of a quick x-ray on the baby..geeeeezzz)
Reply:Check with your OB. Because you are high risk, there could be some special circumstances why you cannot have any dental work done. During normal pregnancies, dental work is okay, especially in the second trimester. My OB has a form letter for pregnant women to take to their dentist which indicates what procedures and medications are safe during pregnancy. I am somewhat high risk myself. I am over 35, with prior miscarriage. I had to have a root canal done around 19 weeks. Although my OB said dental x-rays are safe if lead vests are worn, my dentist office put 2 lead vests on me for added insurance. My OB called me in a prescription of Darvocet for pain before I could even get into the dentist. My letter stated that Tylenol 3 was okay to take as well, so my dentist gave me a prescription for that too, but I only took the Darvocet. Good luck!
Reply:change your dentist. No pregnant women should be given an xray at any stage of pregnancy! Try ora-jel, maybe it'll help a bit.
